MEET OUR LEAD VETERINARIAN

DR. MATTHEW TONERO, DVM

Residency Trained (Practice Limited to Small Animal Internal Medicine)

Dr. Matthew Tonero is the founder and leader of Compassionate Veterinary Care, where he combines expertise with a heartfelt commitment to providing exceptional care.

He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University, followed by a rotating internship at Texas A&M University and a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois. Through this specialized training, he gained advanced expertise in complex case management, diagnostics, and innovative treatment strategies. As a residency-trained veterinarian (practice limited to small animal internal medicine), Dr. Tonero has completed all major requirements for board certification, including passing the certification exam and publishing research in the field. He is currently in the process of completing the final steps for official board certification. His dedication to internal medicine ensures that clinics receive high-level diagnostic insights while keeping patient care at the forefront.

Before veterinary school, Dr. Tonero initially pursued a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University, but before completing his degree, he transitioned to veterinary medicine upon realizing it was his true passion.

Outside of work, he enjoys solving puzzles and strategy games—likely driven by the same curiosity that led him to pursue internal medicine. He and his wife love traveling, trying new restaurants, attending shows, and tackling escape rooms. An outdoor enthusiast, he appreciates the natural beauty of Western North Carolina, where he spends time hiking and exploring the region. At home, he shares his life with four beloved dogs—two German Shepherds, a Golden Retriever/Australian Shepherd mix, and an "All American Kennel Dog" (a.k.a. mutt)—though currently no cats due to his wife’s allergies. While he has a soft spot for Golden Retrievers, he enjoys the unique personalities of all dogs and cats.

Dr. Tonero’s approach emphasizes collaboration, working closely with referring veterinarians to deliver seamless, compassionate service. He believes in building strong partnerships with local clinics to improve outcomes and elevate the standard of care for pets in our community.
